Sypnosis

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

Author: Cassandra Clare

Serie: Mortal Instruments

This saga, is a saga to which I gave a second chance.

The first time I read the first book in this saga, I didn't want to continue with the second book, because Clary's way of being despaired me. And I know, it probably happened to many. But, once I left that on the side, and the way of acting of the characters, I saw that there really is a great plot and a story behind all this story that are really interesting.

What I liked most about this saga is undoubtedly the villain (of at least the first three books), since Valentine is a vile, cruel, calculating being. A villain who somehow wanted to do the right thing the wrong way. A villain who had a great vision, a dream, which led him to close if seen other possibilities. Also, it was something similar to a mad scientist in some way. But, all he did was for a purpose, he left no loose ends.

I will not deny, that while reading the books I was confused, because as I mentioned earlier there is a lot of history in the past of the parents of the main characters and it can get confusing. I mean there are many mysterious characters, names and names that never appear and are only mentioned. In the same way, it was confusing to read as Cassandra Clare, mixed vampires, wolves, fairies, angels, demons and sorcerers. I mean, it is not common, that the authors mix all these mythological creatures in a single book, or are vampires with wolves or angels and demons, or fairies or sorcerers. But, the further the book Cassandra Clare advanced, it made sense of why all these creatures exist in this universe.

Something I did not like about this saga, were the main characters, (mainly Clary). since they are only teenagers surrounded by these beings who are heroes in the society in which they live. So they also seek to be someone, which leads them to be impulsive and reckless half the time, and because of that, they got into more trouble. In addition, that Clary, despite not knowing anything about weapons or the world she is discovering, disobeys the orders of adults to do what she thinks is the best because she can not stay with her hands crossed, what the It leads to complicating things more than it should.

However, the more we advance in this saga, the characters grow and mature, of course, that have their ups and downs. But, they also think about things before doing them, which gives this saga one more point.

<< I see that you are cultivating that vampire side with some success. And glory. A lot of girls like that delicate side of an undead. >>

-Crystal City, Cassandra Clare

Another thing that also improves as the saga progresses, is the writing of Cassandra Clare. At first she basically describes the actions of the characters, with almost no emotions or feelings, and even thoughts; However, as the saga progresses, the emotions of the characters become increasingly present, stronger, more real. And, she adds more and more perspectives, not only of Clary or Jace, but also of Simon, Alec and Isabelle, and the occasional of some other secondary character, which gives more perspective to everything that happens in the history.

Something, which I definitely did not like about this saga, is that in the fourth and half of the fifth book, the characters are drifting, there is no established plot. So the story can be confused as filler, despite being a very slow introduction to the second part of this saga.

The Mortal Instruments, is undoubtedly a saga that is improving as the books go by. A saga, famous around the world, with a movie and a series. A saga that you have to read before seeing the adaptations because if not, there are many loose ends.
