Synopsis

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

This book tells us the story of Emma, who lost her parents in the Dark War. Everyone says Sebastian Morgenstern killed them, but she doesn't think so. For five years she has searched non-stop for some clues that could lead her to her parents' killer. She hasn't found him in those years, however, an unexpected visit from fairies can change everything.

Shadowhunters of the Los Angeles do not hesitate to negotiate with the fairies. Even if that can lead to problems with the Clave.

-Lady Midnight, Cassandra Clare

I think, without a doubt, that this is one of the best books I've read (so far) of the universe of shadowhunters.

The previous books of this saga became heavy, not only for the size of the book (they are fat books), but for the amount of information it contained. The story of the characters, there was always a past that was revealed as you read the pages. But, in this book, as readers we already know all the story. (If you have read the sagas before this book) So the reading is more fluid and lighter even with book size. So I finished this book faster than I thought.

Cassandra brings us back to several secondary characters we met in City of Heavenly Fire. To Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorn family, who become the main characters of this new saga. Emma, being a fearless, adventurous, impulsive girl with a great thirst for revenge. The last Carstairs blinds before his wishes. On the other hand, we have Julian Blackthorn, the third eldest son in the family, who after his family was taken away in the Dark War, he became the man of the house. A respectable boy, with more responsibilities than any other boy of his age, a boy who is always tense and attentive to what is happening around him, especially with his loved ones. Julian, a parabatai who is always thinking of others and never of himself.

Meanwhile, Tavvy, Ty, Dru and Livvy have already grown. The five years have flown by, and Julian's brothers are no longer so small. I adored the fact that Cassandra described how the little ones of the Blackthorne grew and matured. Also the fact, that despite being brothers, they are all very different from each other. And that somehow, everyone loves and loves each other no matter their defects.

The family dynamics of these characters is really very touching, the more you read this, the more you can feel the love and affection they have.

Cassandra introduces new characters in this story, characters very different from those of her previous stories. Enigmatic characters, and characters that will win the heart of the Shadowhunters of the Los Angeles Institute.

Something that I notice a lot through the pages, which is there is a lot of mention of Clary and Jace through the pages, and it is a mention that sometimes you can come to a comparison between the characters of this saga and The Mortal Instruments. Although this comparison can also idolize these two characters. However, this time Cassandra marked a great line of comparison between the characters of his previous sagas, not as in The Origins. Where the characters were their two sagas were very similar to each other.

Something remarkable, in this saga and that I have to mention, is that this time Cassandra left romance on a secondary level. (FINALLY!) And went directly to what happened in the story. Although, it is also true that this genre was not lacking as in all the books that Cassandra does. In this story, there is more mystery than action regarding what happens.

The book has a plot that catches you when you get to the right chapter and once there you can't stop reading. A book with many unexpected twists, and although there are some patterns that Cassandra has repeated in this book, in short, the twists presented by the plot will leave you with your mouth open.
