Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Veronica Clarke never thought she would wish she’d failed a test until she finds herself holding a thick piece of plastic in her hands and staring at two solid pink lines. Even the most consistent use of condoms won’t prevent pregnancy when your boyfriend secretly pokes holes in them to keep you from going out-of-state for college.

Veronica needs an abortion, but the closest place she can legally get one is over nine hundred miles away—and Veronica doesn’t have a car. Too ashamed to ask her friends or family for help, Veronica turns to the one person she believes won’t judge her: Bailey Butler, Jefferson High’s own little black cloud of anger and snark—and Veronica’s ex-best friend. Once on the road, Veronica quickly remembers nothing with Bailey is ever simple and that means two days of stolen cars, shotguns, crazed ex-boyfriends, truck stop strippers with pro-life agendas, and a limo driver named Bob. But the pain and betrayal of their broken friendship can’t be outrun. When their fighting leads to a brutal moment of truth, Bailey abandons Veronica. Now Veronica must risk everything in order to repair the hurt she’s caused.

Opinion

[Before reading]

First of all I want to tell you that this book is about friendship. Yes, it deals with abortion issues, although in my opinion it is not the central theme of this book.

Unpregnant, it is a book that should be read with an open mind, it is good that each of us has our own point of opinion on abortion, but this subject is so delicate and controversial; that this book needs to be read with the idea that you are going to read an adventure, not an informational abortion book.

After the little note above, we can start with the review, Dreamers.

I loved this book! The story is very good, it is a book of adventure and personal growth. And although it doesn't have a romance story, which I know many like, it does have a beautiful friendship story. One which I could identify.

Friendship between Veronica and Bailey

This friendship is unprecedented, it is simply unique. Maybe a bit cliché, but a friendship that I wouldn't mind rereading.

Veronica and Bailey are polar opposites. Bailey being the outcast and the “weird and bad” of the school, while Veronica has it all, she is A’s girl, with a group of inseparable friends and a popular boyfriend. She is the model student.

Because they are so different from each other, they make you laugh out loud while reading this book. Her cat and mouse games, her inventions and her conversations. Also, that we have the fact, that being so different, both explore sides that alone would not have even thought about it.

They complement each other, support each other, and both grow and overcome challenges together.

“She seemed awkward and angry and vulnerable all at the same time”

Adventure

What an adventure Jenny Hendricks and Ted Caplan tell us! Everything happens to girls, either by luck or bad luck, but everything happens to them that I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to know how everything was going to turn out. The chapters were fun and full of spontaneity.

Maybe it was just an easy journey for both of them, but it turned out to be a daring one where they left their comfort zone, and where they both grew up and experienced new things.

“Bailey? I know I’ve been terrible.... but you’re the best friend I’ve ever had”

Final Opinion

Unpregnant has turned out to be one of my favorite books this year. A book in which he could not stop laughing, and of which he wanted to continue learning about the adventure full of twists and turns and spontaneity of Verónica and Bailey.

A book not of romance, of FRIENDSHIP, where there is no villain, but there is self-discovery and confusion about oneself and life itself.

A book that I really applaud the authors for writing because they touched on one of the most controversial topics in the world, abortion.

Dreamers! It is a somewhat long review, but I hope you are encouraged to read this book, it is really worth reading.
