Synopsis

A lovely coming-of-age tale of Beezer navigating the pre-teen angst of family, feelings, and friends. So what if he’s a demon? For ages nine and up.

Beelzebub, the prince of demons, is bored. It's his destiny to one day rule the dark underworld known as the Red Realm, but it's sooo boring down there. All he wants to do is lay around all day in the lava pits (ahhh), boss everyone around (rude!), and maybe play a cruel prank (or two). But Beelzebub's father has had it with his son's nasty attitude. No one talks back to the Red King. NO ONE.

A disgraced Beelzebub is banished by his father and cursed to spend his days in the worst place either of them can imagine: EARTH. Now Beezer (his new name... which he hates) has to navigate a family (way too nice for his liking) that doesn't know the truth behind where he really came from. Oh, and his human body? Not a fan. Too many feelings! And it makes weird sounds.

What would Beezer do to get back home and reclaim his rightful place next to his father? Anything it takes. That is unless, he finds a new path (ugh, work).

Opinion

At first I did not have high expectations for this book, and the truth, it surprised me, a lot.

This book tells the story of Beezer, the prince of Hell. He is destined to rule alongside his father, but, after a fight with the almighty King of Hell, he is sent to Earth. Where will he meet Jessica, his new adoptive mother, and his new adoptive siblings.

History.

Brandon T. presents us with a world of fantasy and magic. Where, in Hell, everything is lifeless and withered, where the beings that inhabit that place are afraid. And, on the other hand, Brandon T. shows us the human world as it is today. With many commercial stores, electronic devices that can become addictions, and how much adults can struggle to get a job.

There were moments in the book, the more I listened the more surreal the story seemed to me. I mean, who doesn't get shocked when they discover that magic exists? The characters accepted ALL the oddities of Beezer as if it were the NORMAL thing in the world, (except for Jessica, she did come in a LITTLE in shock). Even though the story is very short in duration, it seemed to me that it went too fast, personally, it lacked a little more common sense for the characters.

Although, this book shows a lot of truths from today's world. Brandon T. presents it to us as comic moments, but, there is much truth in them. There are many lessons that the author of this expresses to us through his words.

Cliches.

What is also true in this story is that the end is totally predictable, you expect it once you start reading the main character's thoughts and his total confusion. Although it is also true, that there were a couple of events that were a bit unexpected, like this type of cliches that you know can happen, but you put them together with many others, that you really do not know is going to happen.

Characters.

Beezer, the main character in this story, is a spoiled, stubborn, reckless and over-the-top guy, full of pride. All for being the son of the King of the Underworld, the heir to the throne. A character, which I definitely hated when I saw how he treated others at the beginning. However, Beezer showed tremendous growth throughout history. Although, until the end, he was impulsive and immature.

His adoptive brothers are characters who play a fundamental role in the plot, despite the fact that the story unfolds in a short period of time. They are curious, and VERY hyperactive. They are the complete opposite of Beezer. So much so that the interaction between the three seemed fun to me.

Now Jessica, Beezer's adoptive mother. Even though she is the adult in the house, she really doesn't seem like it. Perhaps because she gave children too many freedoms, or because she was VERY patient with them. At first I thought she would play a bigger role, but she seemed to me more like a school counselor, the kind of person who wants to advise you as an elder but at the same time wants to be your friend.

Narration.

I loved the narration of the book.

Fred Berman did a great job bringing Beezer to life. Expressing and making readers identify with Beezer's feelings.

What I liked the most is that there were other people giving life to the other characters in the story. It was not just one voice for all the characters, there were several, which made it easier to follow the story. This team managed that all the scenes had what was necessary (from the intonation of the voice, the feelings; without forgetting the sound effects) so that I could imagine the story in my head. Plus they made me laugh while doing my homework.

Beezer is a short and quick story to listen to. I couldn't stop laughing at the characters' occurrences and getting involved with the characters in their adventures.

It is a story to listen between two heavy readings. Ideal for children.
