<<But one thing I’d learned from being a son of Frey - I couldn’t always fight my friends’ battles>>

-The Hammer of Thor, Rick Riordan

Synopsis

It's been six weeks since Magnus and his friends returned from defeating Fenris Wolf and the fire giants. Magnus has adjusted to life at the Hotel Valhalla—as much as a once-homeless and previously alive kid can. As a son of Frey, the god of summer, fertility, and health, Magnus doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of Odin's chosen warriors, but he has a few good peeps among his hallmates on floor nineteen, and he's been dutifully training for Ragnarok along with everyone else. His days have settled into a new kind of normal.

But Magnus should have known there's no such thing as normal in the Nine Worlds. His friends Hearthstone and Blitzen have disappeared. A new hallmate is creating chaos. According to a very nervous goat, a certain object belonging to Thor is still missing, and the thunder god's enemies will stop at nothing to gain control of it.

Time to summon Jack, the Sword of Summer, and take action. Too bad the only action Jack seems to be interested in is dates with other magical weapons. . .

<<”Blood is a powerful thing. I can always found through him.>>

-The Hammer of Thor, Rick Riordan

This book is about family reunions.

Like I mentioned in the review of the Sword of Summer, the first book of this saga. The main characters of the books, have a lot of background, they have suffer a lot, that they ended up being lonely. Being freaks between their kind.

Hearth is an elf, who is kind, curious, with a lot of love to give. But, he has suffered a lot. He lost his brother and mother, his father blames him for it. And, he escaped to do what he wanted to do the most, learn magic, at a high cost. In this book we traveled to Alfheim, where we met his father, and we learned more about the childhood of Hearth. A place that is bright all the time, can be as dark as Nidavellir.

We also learned more about the relationship Loki has with his sons and daughters. How being their sons can affect them in a good or in a bad way and why. Not only that, in this book Loki made more appearances, than in the previous book. After all, he is the father of the bride. But, been the god trickness, the characters cannot trust him. He opened his bitter feeling to Magnus, but, how can he trust him when his uncle is under the control of Loki?

Magnus wants to trust his uncle, but everytime he sees him, he is with Loki. And he knows, he can’t trust in that god. He feels sorry, his uncle lost his family. And the words, Annabeth said to him the last time they saw each other, made him doubt. Can he gave his uncle another change?

Rick Riordan add diversity in this book. He present to us Alex Fierro, a daughter or son of Loki. Alex is what you can call a transgender, in fact, he is just gender fluid. One day he can a be a he, and the next a she, this a ability a gift from Loki. I like this point, because, now days, diversity and inclusion is really important, and, that Rick Riordan added this factor just gives this book an extra point.

Just as the main characters, Alex has suffered a lot through his life. Rejected by his father and his stepmother, he was force to live in the street by choice, and making friends who accepted him for who he was. His first day in Hotel Valhalla in not the best, and the nineteen floor neighbors knows it. But, when her godly parent is involved in making his sister life a mess, he doesn’t doubt in help her. Definitely a character I love, because, he can be as weird as he can, but, he knows who he wants to be. And that, is something I really admire in this character.

In this book, I expected an improvement in the sword abilities of Magnus, I mean, he has been in the hotel for almost a moth and a halb. You expected that with a little bit of training he could improve. But, he stills depend mainly in Jack to survive in this adventure. And, I understand his father in not a warrior, but I expected more of him in this book.

What I like since the beginning of this saga is the friendship the character maintain. They support each other, and the trust each one another. Even, if they haven’t seen in weeks, their friendship is just as strong as the end of The Sword of Summer.

And, everytime Loki appear on this book, I imagined Tom Hiddleston in my head, I just couldn’t stop thinking in him. And, everytime he was described I had to remain me I was reading a book, so I had to put the Loki, Rick described on the book in my head instead of Tom’s face.

A book with more gods, worlds to discover, technology mixed with magic, adventure and magic. A book where a misstep can lead you into a trap.
